Engineering doesn't stop when a project is issued for construction.

Materials evolve. Standards change. Products improve. Better engineering decisions come from understanding not just what a product does, but why it was developed, where it performs best, and the challenges it is designed to solve.

Earlier this week, our hydraulic team welcomed Hydroflow Distributors (Aust) Pty Ltd to the Goldfish & Bay office for a technical Lunch & Learn exploring the Saint-Gobain PAM Ensign-Agilium® cast iron drainage system.

The session went beyond product features to examine the engineering principles behind modern cast iron drainage design. Topics included acoustic performance, fire resistance, corrosion protection, lifecycle durability, sustainability, installation considerations and compliance with EN 877, alongside examples of how these systems are being used across healthcare, residential, mixed use and major infrastructure projects.

One of the most valuable takeaways was the role material selection plays in overall building performance. Drainage design extends well beyond hydraulic capacity. Acoustic comfort, fire safety, maintenance, embodied carbon and constructability all influence long term outcomes. We also explored how recent developments in cast iron drainage technology are reducing installation weight and embodied carbon while maintaining the durability and reliability the material is known for.

Technical sessions like these are an important part of how we work. They give our engineers the opportunity to question, discuss and deepen their understanding of emerging products, helping us make more informed decisions for the projects and clients we support.
