After a short break, we're bringing back This Month in Engineering, where we explore the projects, innovations and engineering milestones that continue to shape the built environment.
This time, we're heading to the South Pole.
Most of us don't think twice about turning on a tap, flicking a light switch or flushing a toilet. At the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, none of those things happen without carefully engineered systems working behind the scenes.
There is no electrical grid. No town water. No sewer network. Everything needed to keep the station running has to be generated, distributed and maintained on site.
While researching this month's edition, one thing really stood out: a building isn't just a building. In one of the world's harshest environments, it becomes its own power station, water treatment plant and critical infrastructure network, with every system working together to support the people inside.
This edition takes a look behind the walls to explore the building services engineering that makes it all possible.
